THE EVENING WITH CHRIST

Catholics from Waialua to Honolulu, from the ages of seven to 97, gathered at Our Lady of Sorrows Wahiawa church to spend an evening with Christ this past Friday, February 25th, 2011 at 7pm. Our Lady of Sorrows’ Young Adult Ministry hosted their second praise and worship series, “An Evening with Christ.” The evening’s music was led by ICC and OLPH’s youth and young adults.

An Evening with Christ is a praise and worship series hosted by OLS YAM every last Friday of the month at 7pm inside the OLS church. Each month a new group will come to Wahiawa and lead the evening with praise and worship through music and testimonies. It began on Jan. 25th, with the night’s worship led by the OLS Young Adult Choir. Parishioners from Co-cathedral, Immaculate Conception, St. John’s Mililani, St. Michael’s Waialua, Grace Bible Christian Church came to spend the evening praising and worshiping our saving Lord. “The night that was filled with the Holy Spirit,” said Lani Varde, OLS Pastoral Council member.

February’s edition of the series brought new faces and a new sound to Wahiawa with music from a collaboration of ICC and OLPH’s youth and young adult ministries. OLS Music Minister and young adult, Kainoa Fukumoto said that “it was great to see our brothers and sisters from all over the island in our home parish.” OLS Youth Minister Annette Anduha was able to meet the Youth Ministers from ICC and OLPH. With inspirational music, like Open the Eyes of My Heart Lord and Lean on Me (pictured below), and testimonies that were heartfelt and relatable to our youth of today, the true lesson of the night was to always rely on God.

After the praise and worship, there was fellowship in the parish hall with pizza and other foods. “There were people from OLS, ICC, OLPH, and St. Joseph’s at my table,” said one youth. Roslyn Pascua, OLS Pastoral Council member, “This is good!” The fellowship allowed for more collaboration between groups and networking of young adult ministries. “We need more things like this so that our ministries can grow and learn from each other,” said Joshua Varde Laguana, OLS Young Adult Minister.

The evening went until 9:30 when everyone had to go their separate ways. As worship leader, Derrick Alcayde said, “I see all of these young people here and you could be anywhere else but here, but you decided to come here and spend the evening with Christ.” And that’s exactly what they did, spent the evening with Christ.

“An Evening with Christ” returns in March with a Lenten edition and the Living Stations of the Cross, led by the OLS Youth and Young Adults on March 25th at 7pm. The praise and worship resumes in April with music led by another collaboration of St. Elizabeth and OLPH.
